Police were called shortly after 03:30 on Friday morning
A man in his 20s has died after a car was crashed into a tree on a busy A-road.
It happened on the A414, between Chelmsford and Ongar, shortly before 03:30 BST on Friday.
The road was shut between the King Street and Rookery Road junctions by Essex Police, but was reopened by the afternoon.
"We do not believe any other vehicles were involved," said the force, adding it was supporting the man's family.
"We would ask people not to speculate about the circumstances of the collision."
Average speed cameras, lower speed limits and new signage were introduced on the A414 after five fatal crashes in 2024.
The measures were brought in along 14.5 miles (23km) of the road between Chelmsford and North Weald.
Officers have appealed for information and footage related to Friday's crash.
