A man has died in a fatal head-on crash between a truck and a car on a major highway north of Canberra.

Emergency services were called after a truck and a car crashed on the Barton Highway near Jeir, about 35 kilometres north of Canberra, at 1.40pm on Tuesday, August 12.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the 78-year-old male driver of the car, however he died at the scene.
NSW Ambulance said the vehicles had a head-on collision on the highway.
The driver of the truck, a man believed to be aged in his 40s, was also treated by paramedics before being taken to Yass hospital for mandatory testing.
Hume police officers established a crime scene, with crash investigators on site.

The Barton Highway was closed in both directions between Nanima Road and Murrumbateman Road until 9.30pm on Tuesday.
