Police say the fatal stabbing of an 83-year old man in a Newcastle car park was a random attack.
Emergency services were called to the scene near a Charlestown shopping strip around 9:50am on Wednesday and found the man unresponsive.
Police said the elderly man appeared to have suffered multiple stab wounds.
He died before emergency service crews arrived.
Detective Chief Inspector Scott Parker described the incident as a tragic situation.
"The deceased man is a man of very good character," he said.
"It seems a very random and senseless attack."
Inspector Parker said members of the public attempted to save the man before paramedics arrived.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested over the incident.
He was reportedly seen running along the Pacific Highway in Charlestown shortly after the incident, and turned himself into Newcastle Police Station three hours later.
"There are no indicators that the men are known to one another," Inspector Parker said.
"The investigation is very much in its infancy, with multiple lines of inquiry being considered."
Police said a knife was recovered from the scene.
Several schools were in lockdown throughout the day while a manhunt was underway. No one else was injured.
The 53-year-old man remains in police custody and is expected to be charged with murder.
