A man has been left in hospital with serious injuries after a crash near Colchester.
Emergency services were called to the A12 between Marks Tey and Colchester On Saturday night.
Police said a car had left the northbound carriageway and caught fire.
The road was shut in both directions for around six hours as the emergency services worked to secure the scene.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: “A lengthy road closure was in place on the A12 northbound between Marks Tey and Stanway while officers responded to a serious collision.
“We were first called to reports of a single-vehicle collision, with a car leaving the carriageway before catching fire, at around 8.30pm on Saturday, October 18.
“A man has been treated for serious injuries and remains in hospital.
“Due to the damage caused and our ongoing response with Highways partners to make the road safe, a closure remained in place overnight.
“This has since been lifted and we thank the public for their patience, recognising the significant disruption caused.
“Our enquiries continue.
