A man was shot by police officers in Jersey City after he had been shooting at vehicles, including marked police cruisers, according to officials.
Officers came under fire just before 1:30 p.m. Friday as they were driving their department vehicles down JFK Boulevard near Clinton Avenue, the mayor’s office said. A man had seemingly firing at random vehicles going down the street, a witness said, including at least two marked police vehicles.
“I was standing right here, he was over there and at one point he pointed gun at me while shooting at other vehicles,” said the witness, who did not wish to be identified.

Another witness said the man fired about four or five shots in total. Both police vehicles were struck by gunfire and radioed for backup. Police said a sergeant who arrived shortly after was fired upon as well, which is when he got out of his vehicle and returned fire, hitting the suspect.
The suspect, who had not yet been identified, was taken to a nearby hospital. The state attorney general’s office said he later died.
A gun allegedly used by the suspect could be seen in the street.
None of the four officers who had been fired at were struck, nor were any other people in the area. The officers were brought to the hospital for evaluation.
