A man is recovering in hospital after allegedly being shot during a carjacking on Hobart’s eastern shore this morning.
Police say the 40-year-old was forced into his white Volkswagen Golf on Rosny Hill around 10am on Friday by two masked offenders, who then drove him to Ronnie Street.
Detective Acting Inspector Rick Newman said it was there a gunshot was fired during an altercation inside the vehicle.
“A gunshot has gone off and he’s then managed to get out of the car and run off,” he said.
The man fled to a nearby property, where residents who heard the shot called police.
“The man’s actually run into the backyard of one of the nearby houses and alerted the occupant of the house who called police,” Newman said.
The victim suffered an injury to his finger and is being treated in hospital.
The two alleged offenders, both wearing balaclavas, remain on the run in the stolen car.
Police believe at least one of them is armed with what Newman described as “a shortened firearm”.
No clear descriptions of the suspects are available due to their face coverings.
“The victim was a bit shook up at the time, so he didn’t get much of a look at them,” Newman said.
While police do not believe there is a broader threat to the public, they are urging anyone who spots the white Volkswagen Golf – registration L59PA – not to approach it.
“We’d ask the members of the public, whilst we don’t think there’s any greater threat to the members of the public, we’d ask them if they see that vehicle to call it in and not to approach it, bearing in mind that one of the offenders, we believe, is armed,” Newman said.
Investigators believe the incident may have been targeted.
“At the moment we’ve got the entire South-East [Criminal Investigation Branch] working on the matter and that’ll continue for as long as it’s needed,” Newman added.
“We’ll keep searching until we find the car and/or the offenders.”
Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers or police on 131 444.
Ronnie Street was earlier cordoned off between The Esplanade and East Derwent Highway as police and forensic units examined the scene.
