NEW CASSEL, NY — A Hempstead man was arrested on Friday after pulling on car door handles in New Cassel, police said.
Officers responded to the suspicious activity at 4 a.m. on Magnolia Avenue, police said.
Upon arrival, Melvin Daniels, 20, was located and placed into custody, police said.
An investigation revealed that Daniels was found in possession of a loaded Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun, authorities said.
While officers were processing the arrest, Daniels assaulted someone in the precinct holding cell, police said.
Daniels is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.
He will be arraigned on Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
