AGAWAM, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A heavy police presence closed down Springfield Street in Agawam on Thursday night.
We spoke with a man who lives on Springfield Street, and he says he saw it firsthand. A big bang, blood on the pavement, and a shattered windshield on Springfield Street in Agawam. At least that’s what Richard Godveldt said he saw Thursday night Godveldt told us he witnessed the crash from inside his home. When he ran outside, he saw something he’ll never forget, “I heard a big sound, like a big bang. And so, I came out and I looked and so I went down the street. There was a guy laying in the street with blood all over his face. And it didn’t look too good. I saw the vehicle. It had a big old hole in the windshield. And it was car parts all over the street.”
Police shut down Springfield Street as they investigated. Godveldt, describing the scene as shocking, yet not surprising.
“We got a problem here on this street. People are going too fast all the time. They’re going like 50, 55, 60 miles an hour. And they need to put more signs up for the speed limit. They make a big difference. They slow, get the people to slow down a little bit, you know?” Godveldt said.
According to the Agawam Police, the accident occurred just after 5 p.m. on Thursday. The pedestrian, a 41-year-old man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the police.
Meanwhile, this accident hits home for Godveldt, he lost a good friend the same way, “My friend got killed about a year and a half ago. About three, four blocks down there. He used to clean the streets and all that. My buddy Pete.”
