With Toyota rolling out a host of oddities for the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Mazda has announced its own set. But rather than going for shock value, the Hiroshima-based brand is keeping its focus on what it knows best: the connection between people and cars.
Under the theme "The joy of driving fuels a sustainable tomorrow," Mazda's exhibit will center on how driving pleasure and environmental responsibility can coexist.
"Toward the year 2035 when there will be technological innovations and much advanced social infrastructure, Mazda aims to contribute to a bountiful planet while responding to people’s passion for cars and driving, and their desire to enjoy driving for as long as possible. Mazda envisions a world that harmonizes a sustainable society with uplifting experiences through the joy of driving," Mazda said.
Headlining that vision is a new concept vehicle, teased through a single shadowy image.
The teaser image shows a sleek silhouette with coupe-like contours that might fool you into thinking it's a two-door model – a follow-up to the Iconic SP concept that debuted two years ago. However, a few tweaks through editing apps (see image above) and a closer look reveal a B-pillar and front doors, confirming it as a four-door model despite the fastback proportions.
That makes it likely to be a sedan, but given how other automakers have embraced the "four-door coupe" idea, it wouldn't be surprising if this new concept sits in that space.
The brand hasn't shared any details on powertrain or dimensions, but given Mazda's focus on driving pleasure, it's safe to expect a layout and design centered around balance and feel. It might be an EV with the "sustainability" trope casually thrown around, but we're not ruling out that the concept will be a combustion model, likely using alternative fuels to eliminate emissions.
Mazda calls the teaser car its "Vision Model," which means what we'll witness at the auto show will be a concept car. However, the company's track record leaves room for more. The 2011 Takeri concept, for instance, evolved almost directly into the Mazda 6 that followed. If Mazda is following that same playbook, this new four-door could hint at a future production model – possibly a replacement for the long-discontinued 6 sedan or something entirely new.
Beyond this main showcase, Mazda's booth will also feature CO2-capture technology that reduces emissions as you drive, algae-based carbon-neutral fuel, and the new-generation CX-5, making its first public appearance. Visitors can also expect displays of the RX-7, the Spirit Racing RS Future Concept from the Super Taikyu Series, and even a KidZania workshop that introduces children to Mazda's craft-based manufacturing process.
