Police have released more details after a man was killed when he was hit by a car in Meltham yesterday afternoon.
The man, who has not been named publicly, was 60 years old and was walking along the pavement with a woman when he was hit by a grey Skoda Fabia. The woman was also struck by the car but suffered minor injuries.
The tragedy happened in Meltham Mills Road at 2pm and a large police scene soon followed with the road being closed for much of the day. It is thought the car left the road and mounted the pavement.
Today, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that the Skoda driver, a 33-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Meltham. It happened in Meltham Mills Road at around 2pm yesterday (Friday) and involved a grey Skoda Fabia and two pedestrians.
"The Skoda was travelling towards Huddersfield when it left the road and struck a man and woman on the pavement. The man, aged 60, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The woman suffered minor injuries.
"The Skoda driver, a 33-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The Major Collision Enquiry Team is investigating this incident and is appealing to any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has footage or information which may assist in this matter."
