WESTPORT — A stretch of the southbound side of the Merritt Parkway has been closed in Westport and Fairfield for hours Monday morning after a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle, causing serious injuries, according to state officials.
The crash occurred near Exit 21 — old Exit 42  — in Westport.

The southbound side of the parkway remained closed and the scene was active as of around 9:30 a.m., state police said. 
The crash and traffic in Westport and Fairfield was causing delays. Fairfield Public Schools told families in a message Monday morning that buses could be delayed due to "an accident on the Merritt Parkway." 
Southbound traffic on Interstate 95, which runs parallel to Route 15 to the parkway's south in southwestern Connecticut, also was stalled. As of around 9:15 a.m., southbound traffic on Interstate 95 was slowed through Bridgeport and as far north as Stratford, state Department of Transportation cameras showed. 
Some local roads in the Coleytown section of Westport where the crash occurred on the Merritt also were delayed, according to the DOT's traffic monitoring site.

Connecticut State Police said troopers out of Bridgeport were called around 4:15 a.m. to the southbound side of the parkway for a "reported car vs pedestrian collision."
The agency said serious injuries had been reported.
The state police crash reconstruction unit was called to assist at the scene.
The state DOT's traffic monitoring site showed the southbound lanes of the Merritt Parkway were closed between exits 27 in Fairfield and 21 in Westport for a crash.

Southbound traffic was stopped up to around exit 27, the DOT's traffic site showed.
State police said the duration of the closure is "unknown," and asked drivers in the area to seek alternate routes.
