A Tyne and Wear Metro train has been involved in a crash with a car at a level crossing in Newcastle. The collision happened just before 9.55am on Friday morning on Callerton Lane, with emergency services attending to the scene.
No one is believed to have sustained any serious injuries, and a car could be seen being uplifted, alongside a stationary Metro train on photographs from the area. One person was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment by the ambulance service.
Firefighters from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service assisted police and ambulance staff in making the scene safe, and heavy rescue response units that were mobilised were not required.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 9.55am today (Friday), we received a report of a collision involving a Metro train and a car at a level crossing on Callerton Lane in Newcastle.
"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene, and nobody is believed to have sustained any serious injuries."
Service was suspended and the road was blocked while emergency crews dealt with the incident. The Tyne and Wear Metro account on X has posted the following, confirming that the disruption has now cleared: "The earlier disruption has now cleared, and Metro services have resumed between Airport and Kingston Park, although trains are behind schedule.
"We are working on restoring the timetable as quickly as possible. Ticket acceptance will continue until 12pm."
Kevin Storey, Operations Director at Nexus, said: "An incident occurred just before 10am today, Friday 26 September, where a car was involved in a collision with a Metro train at the Callerton Parkway level crossing near Newcastle.
"Metro services were suspended between Airport and Kingston Park while the emergency services attended the scene. Nobody has been seriously injured. The car has been removed from the level crossing.
"There was no damage to tracks or signals and inspections have shown that the crossing was functioning correctly. We resumed operations in the affected area at 11.30am. We’d like to stress to the public to always take extra care and attention at Metro level crossings to ensure they are used safely."
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9.53am on Friday 26 September to reports of an incident at Callerton Parkway station in Newcastle.
"We dispatched an ambulance crew and a clinical team leader to the scene, and transported one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) for further treatment."
A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We can confirm that earlier this morning (Friday 26th September) two fire appliances were in attendance of a road traffic collision in Newcastle.
“Our Control Room team received the emergency call at 09:58 and crews from West Denton Community Fire Station were dispatched to the scene at Callerton Lane, where a vehicle had collided with a Metro train.
"Firefighters assisted blue light colleagues from Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service by making the scene safe. Heavy Rescue response units from Hebburn and South Shields Community Fire Stations were mobilised to the incident but not required. The crews left the scene at 10:13.”
