The SAIC brand MG Motor apparently wants to launch a total of 13 electrified vehicles worldwide in the next two years, including BEVs, EREVs and PHEVs. The model development initiative is planned to cost about 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion euros).
The brand’s first product, which is based on the new development strategy for New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), is to be the new MG4. Pre-sales started at the beginning of August, and the market launch is scheduled for August 29th.
For the rest of the model lineup, MG CEO Chen Cui has announced plans to launch 13 new NEV models worldwide within two years. To achieve this ambitious plan, MG has stated it will invest 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion euros) in the development of vehicles with alternative drive systems and to launch a wide range of all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and vehicles with range extenders.
The traditional British company MG was taken over by the Chinese state-owned group SAIC in 2005, and is now quite successful again in Europe. With 153,100 units sold in Europe in the first half of 2025, MG is now one of the most successful Chinese car brands in Europe. In China itself, however, MG is much less successful and only delivered 57,254 vehicles between January and July 2025, according to China EV DataTracker. One of the reasons for the weak performance in Europe is said to be that MG has so far only offered some of its cars as NEVs, which is now the largest market segment in China. Additionally, facing tariffs in Europe, MG, as well as competitor BYD, are attempting to sidestep the regulation by selling more hybrid vehicles.
Chen Cui further emphasized that the brand’s entry into the electric vehicle segment was not driven by low prices. The company will actively utilize the technologies and supply chains of its parent company, SAIC. SAIC is also heavily involved in joint electric vehicle projects with Audi (through the AUDI brand) and Huawei (through the Shangjie brand). The subsidiary IM Motors, which recently celebrated its market entry in the UK, also just presented a new range-extender vehicle. With the L6, a model with a solid-state battery has also been presented early last year.
