BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Demand for electric cars surged again last year. More than 545,000 pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) hit the roads in 2025, according to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). This represents a 45 percent increase compared to the exceptionally weak previous year. Back then, sales had plummeted due to the unexpected end of the so-called environmental bonus.
Experts, however, do not yet see a genuine takeoff in electromobility in Germany. “At first glance, the numbers suggest an electric boom,” said mobility expert Constantin Gall from the consulting firm EY. “In reality, though, the strong growth in 2025 merely compensates for the sales slump of 2024.” Compared to 2023, the increase is only about four percent.
The hoped-for acceleration is occurring much more slowly and sluggishly than expected. The Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK) also says the development of electric vehicle sales is falling short of expectations.
New Purchase Incentive Planned
Nevertheless, nearly one in five new registrations last year was a BEV. Their share of all new registrations rose by about 5.6 percentage points year-on-year to just over 19 percent. In October, the federal government announced the reintroduction of an electric car purchase incentive, which is expected to be implemented later this year. This could further boost sales.
Overall, demand for new cars increased across all drive types, especially toward the end of the year. According to the KBA, around 2.9 million passenger cars were newly registered in Germany in 2025. That is about 1.4 percent more than the previous year. Growth is slightly above manufacturers’ forecasts, said VDIK chairwoman Imelda Labbé.
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) expects slight growth for the current year. In total, around 2.95 million cars could be newly registered. However, even these numbers are still significantly below the record year of 2019, before the pandemic. At that time, according to the forecast for 2026, almost 20 percent more new cars were registered./maa/DP/jha
