A week after a car explosion killed 13 people near the Red Fort in Delhi, the National Investigation Agency said on Sunday (November 16, 2025) that the driver of the car, Umar ul Nabi — a doctor by profession — was a “suicide bomber”. The agency has arrested a Kashmiri resident for allegedly conspiring with with the doctor to carry out the terror attack .The NIA’s statement confirms that this was the first car-borne suicide attack in the national capital and only the second since the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, when a suicide bomber rammed his car carrying explosives into a bus, killing 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in south Kashmir.
As part of the expanding probe into the Red Fort car blast that claimed 13 lives on November 10, security agencies are preparing to recreate the route taken by Umar ul Nabi, a doctor who has been identified as the one who drove the explosive-laden car, an official said on Sunday. “Though he was initially not spotted with a phone in CCTV footage, he is believed to have had one. We will examine data from all mobile signals in his vicinity to understand who he was in contact with,” the official said.
A resident of Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir attempted self-immolation on Sunday (November 16, 2025), allegedly because the police did not allow him to meet his detained son. Bilal Ahmad Wani, a dry fruit seller by profession, was rushed to the Government Medical College, Anantnag, after suffering “severe burn injuries”, officials said. The doctors said he was “responding to the treatment”.
Bangladesh has firmed up security arrangements across sensitive areas ahead of the International Crimes Tribunal’s (ICT) announcement of the verdict on deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday (November 17, 2025). A large number of Bangladesh Border Guards personnel were deployed over the weekend in the Awami League stronghold of Gopalganj and nearby areas as the Chief Prosecutor Ghazi Monawwar announced that Bangladesh TV and other outlets would live telecast the verdict by the ICT-1.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is likely to submit his resignation to the Governor on Monday (November 17, 2025), before the formation of the new government. He is likely to be sworn in to power again on Thursday (November 20), as the current Assembly’s term runs out by the end of the week. After a meeting of NDA allies in Delhi, it has reportedly been decided that the BJP, being the single largest party in the State, will have the largest number of Cabinet berths. Though Mr. Kumar, who heads the Janata Dal (United), is set to take the Chief Minister’s chair again, the BJP expects to appoint two Deputy CMs as well as the Assembly Speaker, as is the case in the present government, sources said.
Nearly 27 lakh workers’ names were deleted from the database of MGNREGA, the Centre’s rural jobs scheme, between October 10 and November 14 this year, far exceeding the 10.5 lakh additions during the same period. The spike in deletions coincides with the Union government’s push to conduct e-KYC — an electronic know your customer process — for all workers, to weed out ineligible beneficiaries.
Amid shifting regional dynamics following the change of regime in Bangladesh and concerns over China’s growing presence near the vulnerable Siliguri corridor, the Indian Army has reinforced its eastern frontier by establishing three new garrison locations. The new establishments comprise the Lachit Borphukan Military Station in Assam’s Dhubri district and forward bases at Kishanganj in Bihar and Chopra in West Bengal, all sited close to the India-Bangladesh border.
In a first, Home Minister Amit Shah responded in Malayalam to CPI(M) leader and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas’ letter to him, flagging the legal infirmities in the Home Ministry’s directive to cancel the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) registration of a person if he or she is charge-sheeted for an offence carrying a sentence of seven years or more.
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership of insulting icons of West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress on Sunday cited the recent remarks by Madhya Pradesh Minister Inder Singh Parmar on Raja Ram Mohan Roy, saying they reflected a “Bangla Birodhi (anti-Bengali)” mindset. Several Trinamool Congress Ministers and MPs took to social media to express their resentment over Mr. Parmar’s comments, in which he described the social reformer as an “agent of the British” who initiated a “vicious cycle of religious conversion”. Mr. Parmar later apologised, calling his remarks a “slip of the tongue”.
After quitting politics and disowning her own family, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya once again hit out at the close aides of party leader and her brother Tejashwi Yadav. A day after the debacle in the Bihar Assembly election, Ms. Acharya on Saturday (November 15, 2025) blamed Mr. Yadav’s close aides Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat Khan for the humiliating defeat.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Sunday (November 16, 2025) to oppose any attempt to establish a Palestinian state, a day before the U.N. Security Council planned to vote on a U.S.-drafted resolution on Gaza that leaves the door open to Palestinian independence. Mr. Netanyahu has long asserted that creating a Palestinian state would reward Hamas and eventually lead to an even larger Hamas-run state on Israel’s borders. But as the U.S. attempts to push forward with its Gaza ceasefire proposal, he faces heavy international pressure to show flexibility.
It is said that the greatest pleasure lies in anticipation of success than success itself. On day three of the first Test between India and South Africa, thousands of home fans would have trudged into the majestic edifice that the Eden Gardens is with the same feeling. South Africa’s lead was 63 and it had just three wickets left. But after four hours of pulsating cricket, Sunday’s holiday crowd exited the venue shushed into silence and with a feeling of emptiness as the World Test champion won by 30 runs to record one of its greatest away wins.
The final instalment of the “Sincaraz” rivalry for 2025 went to Jannik Sinner. The second-ranked Sinner beat top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (4), 7-5 for the ATP Finals trophy on Sunday in the sixth meeting this year between the two players who are dominating men’s tennis. Sinner defended the title before his home Italian fans for only his second victory over Alcaraz this year after also beating the Spaniard in the Wimbledon final. “It was an incredible season,” Sinner said. “To finish it this way, before my Italian fans, is very special for me.”
