WALLA WALLA – A 32-year-old female driver was rescued from a burning vehicle after a collision on New Year’s Eve, thanks to the quick actions of both off-duty and on-duty law enforcement and fire personnel in Walla Walla.
Multiple 911 calls were received by dispatch about the incident on eastbound U.S. 12 near Rees Avenue at 7:20 p.m.
Off-duty Walla Walla Police Detective Kristen Daschofsky and Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Deputy Ashley Daschofsky arrived first and began life-saving measures for the unconscious driver, who was trapped in the burning vehicle.
Walla Walla Police Department K9 Officer Eric Eastman and Officer Sierra Roberts later joined them, with Eastman removing the driver while Deputy Daschofsky used a fire extinguisher to control the flames.
WWPD Officer Roberts, Detective Daschofsky, and WWPD Detective Kevin Toon forced entry into the rear of the vehicle to ensure no additional occupants were inside.
The Walla Walla Fire Department soon arrived to extinguish the fire and provide medical care. The driver was taken to the hospital.
The Washington State Patrol is investigating the collision.
WWPD said this event showcases effective teamwork among local agencies.
