Major traffic disruption occurred on Saturday after a truck ploughed into 33 cars on the N14 in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg, during heavy convoy movements heading to the Nasrec Expo Centre for the G20 Leaders Summit.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the crash happened at about 8.30am on the R28/N14 highway near the Silverstar Casino interchange and resulted in significant traffic delays.
“A major accident occurred earlier this morning at approximately 8.30.am, involving a Volvo Interlink truck and 33 motor vehicles,” said JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
Preliminary reports indicate the truck, which was carrying animal feed, collided with stationary traffic, causing a massive pile-up.
Several motorists sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals. No fatalities were reported.
Emergency services have since cleared the wrecked vehicles from the roadway, Fihla said.
“Cleanup operations involving debris removal and road safety checks are now in their final stages. The road is expected to be fully reopened shortly. Until then, traffic may move slowly as the scene is cleared.
“Please reduce speed when approaching the Silverstar Casino vicinity on the N14. Allow emergency services space to complete the final cleanup, and, if possible, consider using alternate routes for the next hour to avoid congestion while the backlog clears.”
Police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, the G20 Summit, which began on Saturday, November 22, has already contributed to congestion across Johannesburg, with a heightened police presence deployed to ensure the safety of delegates and visitors.
A total of 42 countries are participating, including 20 G20 members (excluding the United States), 16 guest countries and six nations representing regional economic communities in Africa, the Caribbean and East Asia.
The summit concludes on Sunday, and further traffic delays are expected as heads of state depart for their home countries.
