Police say they found the suspect near NE Grand Avenue and NE Multnomah Street. Officers said they heard a shot fired and saw the man running south on Grand Avenue with the gun.
“An officer used his police vehicle to strike the armed man, knocking him down and causing him to drop the gun,” Portland Police said in a press release. “The man got up and continued running south, where he was challenged by officers on Northeast Holladay Street just east of Northeast Grand Avenue.”
Police say the suspect was not cooperative with commands and was tased. He was arrested and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, now identified as 43-year-old Robert D. Hatley of Portland, has since been released from the hospital and booked into jail. Hatley is facing charges of unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
Police say no one was injured and the officer who struck Hatley has been placed on paid administrative leave.
“As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident and the case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division,” Portland Police said.
