DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – Drivers of electric vehicles will soon have more charging stations to stop at when traveling around the northland.
According to Minnesota Power, they’ll be adding 16 “fast charging stations” throughout northern Minnesota, including four in the city of Duluth.
Leaders celebrated the expansion on Tuesday by unveiling the newest charger installed at Super One’s Miller Hill location.
The new “fast chargers” will include two charging plugs, offering EV owners a quicker way to charge their cars.
“The majority of EV charging happens at home overnight. When you are making longer trips, you need to have security that there’s going to be fast charging available to make sure that people can confidently travel to northern Minnesota in an electric vehicle,” said Katie Frye, Supervisor of Customer Programs and Services for Minnesota Power.
Other cities included in the expansion are Bigfork, Cohasset, Eveleth, Floodwood, Hinkley, Motley, Little Falls, Long Prairie, Silver Bay, International Falls, and Park Rapids.
The Minnesota-based business hopes the new charging stations will be in service by the end of the year.
Each of the 16 Minnesota Power charging sites will feature DC fast chargers equipped with a minimum of two charging plugs.
Most locations will also include a Level 2 charger, offering a cost-effective alternative for EV owners or serving as a backup if the DC fast charger is in use.
