Yangwang’s U9 Track Edition has set a new benchmark as the world’s fastest electric production car – hitting an astonishing 294mph and surpassing previous records by Rimac and Aspark.
The manufacturer’s luxury sub-brand has been steadily refining its U9 electric supercar, with the special Track Edition achieving an extraordinary achievement and reaching a top speed of 293.54mph at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany. This makes it the fastest production electric vehicle (EV) in the world.
Yangwang, owned by BYD and pitched as a manufacturer of tech-heavy, high-performance cars, currently offers two models in China — the U9 and the U8 SUV — with prices of the latter ranging from £120,000 to £200,000.
The Yangwang U9 Track Edition is expected to be in excess of £200,000, but that price tag doesn't seem quite so high when you consider that the super coupe was developed under ex-Lamborghini, Audi and Alfa Romeo designer Wolfgang Egger.
While the standard U9 was already incredibly quick, the newer version has eclipsed its rivals, beating previous benchmarks set by the Rimac Nevera R, which topped out at 268mph, and the Aspark Owl, which reached 272mph.
Pro driver Marc Basseng, who piloted the record-breaking run, is no stranger to speed — he achieved 233mph in the standard U9 on the very same track in 2024. Reflecting on the achievement, he said: “Last year, I thought I'd peaked. I never expected to break my own record so soon — but here we are, at the same track, with new technologies that have made it possible.”
The tech featured in the Track Edition makes this possible. While the regular U9 already boasted four electric motors combining for 1,287bhp, the new car more than doubles that figure, reaching an almost unbelievable 2,958bhp.
The Track Edition also showcases industry-first innovations, built on what BYD describes as “the world’s first mass produced 1200V ultra high voltage vehicle platform,” allowing a new level of EV efficiency and performance.

It also features independent torque vectoring, capable of adjusting power distribution over 100 times per second, ensuring stability and control even at extreme speeds. The DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System keeps the car stable through tight corners and under heavy acceleration or braking.
So the Yangwang U9 Track Edition represents a staggering leap forward for electric performance cars, setting a new benchamark for high-performance production EVs.
