Do you know HOW many years we’ve been waiting for flying cars, and you’re telling us that the first location to have them might be none other than MCO Airport?
Honestly, we were getting to a point where we didn’t know if we’d ever see flying cars — society seemed pretty cool with keeping cars on the ground and just having helicopters and planes in the air, but that all could be changing in a few years. Air taxis could become a thing at MCO Airport by 2028, and we STILL can’t wrap our minds around it.
The Orlando Business Journal has reported that MCO Airport is taking a large step towards launching air mobility services, including electric air taxis, sooner rather than later.
Airport air traffic controllers recently partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration to conduct simulations to test how electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could safely operate near traditional air traffic. There are currently two locations being proposed at MCO — one in the East Airfield and another near the Brightline station. The airport recently partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and confirmed in their findings that “operating up to 22 eVTOL aircraft would result in zero air traffic or wake turbulence conflicts” even on the airport’s busiest days.
The next step of the process is for the “FAA to develop regulatory frameworks for integrating eVTOL aircraft into commercial airspace,” which also includes talking with the Florida Department of Transportation and the city of Orlando to discuss what infrastructure is needed. Right now, the current timeline looks like these aircraft could be up in the air by 2028, as “FAA certification of eVTOL aircraft could begin in the second half of 2026, with vertiport design and development ramping up in 2027.”
The goal is to service 100 miles around MCO Airport, and up to 200 miles in some cases. This new mode of transportation could create $115 billion annually and generate roughly 280,000 jobs by 2035. Honestly, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings put it best, saying, “The age of The Jetsons will be upon all of us.”
