I don’t need a time machine to know 33-year-old Luke Randall won’t get out of jail anytime soon. At 12:20 p.m. on a Monday, Randall smashed his 1981 DeLorean sports car into a parked Toyota. He did it right in front of a police officer.
Randall appeared to have several injuries but refused medical attention. Desmond Kivlehan of the New Milford, New Jersey, Police Department called in backup. Five responding officers found vodka bottles and 87 small bags of cocaine in Randall’s car.
They looked into his record and found he had a DUI from Nov. 3. Police also charged him with careless driving, throwing objects from a motor vehicle, and driving without a license in Harrington Park. He was still wanted for that offense. Police arrested him then and there and took him to the hospital for evaluation.
News outlets are poking fun at Randall’s wheels, the gullwing sports car made famous by the “Back to the Future” movie. The New York Post nicknamed him Marty McHigh. I’m bummed that–in addition to endangering others and injuring himself–he appears to have completely totaled what was a pretty rad classic.
John DeLorean became the youngest division chief in General Motors history before leaving to found the DeLorean Motor Co. in 1973. His 1981 sports car flopped. In 1982, the FBI charged him with trafficking 220 pounds of cocaine worth $24 million to pay off his company’s $17 million in debt. Maybe in court Randall will argue the drugs were just a very authentic period-correct prop.
