Mahindra has given its popular Thar SUV a subtle refresh for 2025. The new Thar keeps the rugged off-road character intact while adding a few thoughtful upgrades. Priced from Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Thar facelift offers a larger touchscreen, more comfort features, and small design tweaks that make the SUV feel more modern without losing its classic appeal.
Here is the comparison between the old Thar and the new Thar 2025:
The new Thar keeps its classic rugged look but comes with some small updates. The grille is now body-coloured, replacing the older black one. The front bumper has silver accents which gives a slightly more premium feel. The round headlamps, wide wheel arches, and chunky bumper are still the same.
From the side, the Thar keeps its boxy shape and high stance. The higher trims get 18-inch alloy wheels, while the base versions come with 16-inch steel wheels. Mahindra has also added two new colours – Battleship Grey and Tango Red, replacing the old Red Rage shade. At the back, the overall look is familiar, but the rear parking camera and silver-accented bumper are new touches.

Inside, the all-black cabin and fabric seats remain, but there are noticeable changes. The biggest change is the 10.25-inch touchscreen, which replaces the smaller 7-inch unit. The steering wheel has been updated, borrowed from the Thar Roxx and XUV700.
Passengers get more comfort with rear AC vents, a two-piece sliding front armrest, and A-pillar grab handles for both driver and co-driver. The Thar also now has a rear washer and wiper, making it more practical. Other features like manual AC, six-speaker audio system, power windows, cruise control, and keyless entry are still available.
The 2025 Thar gets a rearview camera, but the rest of the safety features remain the same. Buyers still get dual front airbags, electronic stability control, rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring, and a built-in roll cage, ensuring it’s safe both on city roads and off-road tracks.
Mechanically, the Thar is unchanged. It continues to offer three engine options. The 2.2-litre diesel produces 132 PS and 300 Nm of torque, available with a 6-speed manual or automatic 4-wheel-drive. The 1.5-litre diesel delivers 117 PS and 300 Nm with rear-wheel drive, while the 2-litre turbo-petrol makes 150 PS and 300 Nm (320 Nm with automatic), with options for rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive. This keeps the Thar capable on both city roads and rough trails.
The 2025 Mahindra Thar facelift costs between Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). Its main rivals include the Maruti Jimny and Force Gurkha 3-door. It’s also a strong off-road alternative to compact SUVs like the Maruti Victoris, Hyundai Creta, Toyota HyRyder, Maruti Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun, and Skoda Kushaq.
