This is the new MG IM5, and it’s a bit different to other cars you’ve seen from the brand before. It’s posher and more high-tech than other models in the range, such as the HS and the MG4, pushing this saloon car into the firing line of premium brands like Mercedes and BMW.
You can check out our review of the IM5 to find out more, but it starts from £39,450 for the single motor version with 295hp. There’s also a ballistically fast Performance version with 751hp which can do 0-60mph in just 3.2 seconds, and that car can be yours for £48,495.
So what other cars could you consider if you like the look of the MG IM5? Well here are seven of the best alternatives.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

The Tesla Model 3 is the most obvious alternative to the IM5 because it falls in exactly the same price bracket, and it also offers a Performance model with blistering performance. It’ll do 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds, despite being over 120hp down on the MG.
Beyond the turn of speed, the Model 3 is great to drive, offers long range (up to 466 miles) and it’s packed with tech. The button-free interior takes some getting used to, but at least the touchscreen is quick and easy to use.

This is the new Mercedes CLA Electric, and it can do a whopping 482 miles on a charge. That’s only recently been beaten by the BMW iX3’s 500-mile range, and the Mercedes has more going for it than just distance between charges.
It’s really comfortable to drive, and it’s a pretty good-looking saloon car as well. It’s a shame that the boot is on the small side, and the touchscreen controls can be a faff to use on the move.

Before the MG IM5 came along, the BYD Seal was the logical Chinese alternative to the Tesla Model 3. It’s well-equipped, comfortable to drive and you can get a 530hp version if you’re after neck-snapping acceleration.
The Seal may offer decent range, but at 354 miles it can’t quite beat the IM5’s 441-mile figure. That said, it’s still a great option if you’re after a premium electric saloon for less than £50,000.

The BMW i4 offers a great blend between comfort and handling, because it’s fun to drive on a country road without shaking your teeth out over bumps. The interior is also really nicely made, although the lack of physical buttons does make it a bit fiddly to operate.
It is a bit more expensive to buy than the IM5, with prices starting from around £51,000, but you can currently save an average of just over £10,000 on a new BMW i4 through Carwow, bringing the price much closer to the MG’s.

With its retro-futuristic styling, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 certainly stands out in a crowded car park. It’s great to drive as well thanks to the soft and comfy suspension, however the rear headroom is a bit tight thanks to that sloping roofline.
It’s also got a smaller boot than the MG at 401 litres (the IM5 has 457 litres on offer). That said, the Ioniq 6 does have a lovely cabin, loads of interior storage space and it’s packed with tech.

For the ultimate electric B-road blast, you can’t really go wrong with the Porsche Taycan. A new one will cost you just over £88,000, more than double the cost of an IM5, but a quick look at Carwow’s used offerings and you’ll find a low-mileage 2021 Taycan 4S for less than £43,000.
It’s great to drive, has a really posh-feeling interior and it looks pretty cool as well. However, the boot isn’t massive and the rear seats aren’t that spacious.

This is the new Kia EV4 Fastback, and it’s one of the best electric cars the brand has ever made. For just under £35,000 you get miles of rear legroom, and a comfortable ride, and there’s a version with an impressive 388 miles of range.
Some might find the styling a bit challenging, and some cars have better cabin storage, but the EV4 stands out for being relaxing to drive and easy to live with.
