OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A new vehicle tax and fee exemption could save Nebraska’s disabled veterans hundreds of dollars each year.
Angela Hamilton bought her truck in December but waited until after the new year to register it, taking advantage of Nebraska’s new vehicle tax and fee exemption for disabled veterans.
“I contacted the Treasurer’s office in my county and got some good information from them. They directed me to the website,” Hamilton said.
She said the new law keeps about $200 to $300 in her pocket, helping her with other expenses.
Roughly 45,000 disabled Nebraskans would qualify for this tax exemption under LB 650. The state considers disabled veterans as anyone who served honorably and has established disability, or anyone receiving compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“And that compensation or that service connection can range from 0% to 100% which means they could be receiving or service connected and receiving a 0% rating, but not receiving compensation from the VA that’s OK they’re still eligible for the benefit,” said Benson Elmore, director of the Douglas County Veterans Service Office.
Those eligible would need to be in the military and the veterans registry. Veterans are encouraged to apply in advance of their registration or renewal. The request for exemption must happen within 30 days of buying a vehicle.
Hamilton said she hopes the exemption can help others like her who have given so much.
“There’s so many unmet needs out there, so I hope that even if it’s just a few dollars here and there that it can be utilized to meet some of those unmet needs for veterans,” Hamilton said.
Qualifying veterans can register with the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs or reach out to their county Veterans Service Office for more information.
