Nissan wants to convince us that the new Navara is not just a Mitsubishi Triton with a different skin
Nissan has finally pulled the wraps off the all-new Navara in Australia, unveiling a tougher-looking pickup that leans heavily on Mitsubishi Triton underpinnings. The company hopes that unique styling touches and local suspension tuning will be enough to differentiate the model from its sibling, and make it a major player in the ultra-competitive midsize pickup segment.
Collaborations between automakers are very common in the segment. Mechanically-related midsize pickup duos include the Ford Ranger / VW Amarok, and the Isuzu D-Max / Mazda BT-50. The Nissan and Mitsubishi alliance is the latest to join the pack, aiming in reducing R&D costs.
What is interesting is that the new pickup truck that will be sold in Australia and New Zealand will be entirely different from the South American Navara, the North American Frontier, and the Chinese Frontier Pro, despite targeting the same segment.
