NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans is grappling with thousands of requests to address abandoned vehicles, but 3-1-1 data shows the city’s improvement in the issue.
City data shows that since the end of 2024, the city received 7,447 requests to address abandoned/junk vehicles.
It lists 3,013 of those requests as pending.
At this point in 2024, the city had 4,700 pending requests out of 7,000
Kerlerec Street resident Louis Hansa said those were “good stats.”
Fox 8 met him next to a vehicle the city parking division marked as abandoned on Friday (12/26).
The warning gives the owner until New Year’s Eve to move the vehicle before it would be impound and sold “to a scrap dealer”.
“Since Katrina, there’s been a few (abandoned vehicles),” he said.
Another Kerlerec Street neighbor, who declined to be identified, described the truck as an eyesore.
She said she’d be astonished if the city removed the vehicle.
Fox 8 reached out to the city for comment on the improved 3-1-1 data.
In 2024, it told Fox 8:
The apparent backlog in the 311 system was caused when the cases were addressed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) but not updated in the system.
DPW recently hired staff to close out these cases and are actively working through the process.
Additionally, the department initiated a bid process to address junk vehicles, due to lack of the appropriate departmental equipment. Another contract is also out for bid to auction junk vehicles, which will allow the city to move cars from the storage yard. These two contracts will significantly help to address some of the outstanding cases.
