Bashaw council has approved a new snow removal policy, and it’s looking for the help of Bashaw residents to help implement it.
Passed during the Dec. 17 council meeting, the new policy sets four snow removal priority routes and expands snow removal from the previous five-day snow removal policy to a full seven-day-a-week basis.
Under the newly passed policy, the town will place signs 12 hours ahead of the commencement of snow removal, with vehicles in the affected area to be removed within that time.
“Our policy is written specifically in such a way that if a good portion of the vehicles aren’t out of the way, then we move to the next section,” said Theresa Fuller, the Bashaw chief administrative officer, in a follow-up interview. “We don’t have the manpower to tag and tow.”
The reason for the policy is that many of the streets in town are so narrow, said Fuller, adding that the town doesn’t want to risk damaging people’s vehicles.
According to Fuller, Bashaw has a policy in place where vehicles need to be moved every so often, but she admits that vehicles are often left on the street for much longer than that, and enforcement is complaint-driven, not proactive.
During the summer months, the town has a bylaw officer once a week; during the winter, that drops down to once every two weeks. When the officer is in town, they are responding to complaints, not doing proactive enforcement.
Generally speaking, commercial areas are priority one under the new policy, with “feeder” routes being priority two. Residential areas comprise priority routes three and four.
The policy also indicates that, due to safety concerns for town staff, snow removal operations will be suspended at Temperatures of minus 35 C or colder, a topic that generated discussion during the Dec. 17 meeting.
“Is that the ambient, or feels like temperature?” asked deputy mayor Kyle McIntosh. “Which weather service are we using?”
Fuller said that she was leaning towards windchill for the safety of town staff, but the source of the temperature wasn’t clarified.
