The latest Tesla Model Y Performance gets 460hp and is capable of 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds
Tesla has taken the wraps off its new Model Y Performance. Serving as the halo model in the electric SUV’s range, this sporty upgrade is more than just a power boost – it gets an overhauled design, improved interior and upgraded chassis too.
Prices start from £61,990 ahead of first deliveries in October, when it’ll go head to head with the likes of the Kia EV6 GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Ford Mustang Mach-e GT. Here are all the details on this latest Tesla – which looks to be a rather more serious machine than the old Model Y Performance was.
Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Carwow. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
The recent Model Y facelift distanced it from the smaller Model 3 with the addition of full-width lightbars and smoother, more cohesive lines. The Model Y Performance ramps this up with a sportier look, bringing a more aggressive, low-down front bumper, a rear bumper with a prominent diffuser, a carbon-fibre rear wing, and 21-inch alloy wheels covering red brake calipers.
These updates work together to provide greater downforce and less drag compared to the previous Model Y Performance – improving both cornering prowess and efficiency.
The inside’s had an update too – the front seats have been replaced by sports seats, which remain heated and ventilated but get extra bolstering to hold you in your seat. They also get extendable thigh cushions.
There are carbon-fibre inserts on the dash and door trim, aluminium pedals, and an all-new 16.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Tesla says this is its highest-definition screen yet.
The clue is in the name – the new Model Y Performance isn’t just a visual makeover. It uses the same motors as the Model 3 Performance, providing a beefy 460hp.
The added weight means it’s not quite as quick as the Model 3 – 0-62mph takes 3.3 seconds, rather than the Model 3’s 2.9 – but that still means it out-accelerates the likes of the BMW M5. Top speed is pegged at 155mph.
The battery has also received an upgrade. Tesla says it doesn’t weigh any more than the standard pack but is more energy dense. With just over 3.8 miles per kWh of claimed efficiency, that would mean a battery pack around 94kWh in capacity.
Either way, claimed range is 360 miles according to official tests – just four miles less than the Long Range All-Wheel Drive version.
It’s not just about straight-line speed either. The Model Y Performance gets upgraded adaptive suspension with Standard and Sport modes, plus a Reduced mode for the traction control to unlock a bit more fun and playfulness in the corners.
The Model Y Performance underwent testing and calibration at the Nurburgring and will be built in Tesla’s Brandenburg factory near Berlin, in theory meaning it should be pretty well-attuned to European tastes. We’ll find out when we get a chance to drive one.
You can place your order already, and the Model Y Performance will cost you £61,990 – that’s a tidy £10,000 more than the previously range-topping Long Range All-Wheel Drive model.
First deliveries will start in October in the UK and Ireland.
