The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services has opened a new vehicle inspection site in Duluth to meet demanding needs.
It’s the eighth location in the state, located at 3273 Carlton Street. Other locations include Brooklyn Center, St. Cloud, Fergus Falls, and Bemidji. The expansion aims to improve road safety.
“I remember those days when DPS and our elected officials were receiving calls and emails from Minnesotans, frustrated because they couldn’t get a vehicle inspection and didn’t have any other options. That need was not only heard by DPS, but it was heard by Minnesotans and by our elected officials,” said Pong Xiong, DVS Director.
20 inspectors now work across the eight sites to make sure that rebuilt vehicles use legal parts, addressing another important issue: vehicle fraud.
“Minnesotans who purchase a previously salvaged vehicle can have confidence that they are purchasing a vehicle that was repaired legally,” said DVS Program Director, Greg Loper. “Our inspectors are experts in using a variety of tools to ensure that the parts that are replaced on vehicles are obtained legally.”
In 2025, the department has conducted more than 23,000 safety inspections, working closely with local law enforcement to prevent car fraud. Inspectors have helped recovered over $1.8 million in fraudulent and stolen vehicles.
