DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — With the start of a new year, safety officials are reminding parents and caregivers to take a few minutes to double-check car seats used by young children.
Experts say car seats can loosen over time or be installed incorrectly without anyone realizing it. Changes in routine, switching vehicles, or even holiday travel can affect how securely a seat is fastened.
Parents are encouraged to make sure car seats are properly installed, tightly secured, and appropriate for the child’s age, height, and weight. Straps should fit snugly, chest clips should sit at armpit level, and seats should not move more than an inch when pulled at the base.
Another often-overlooked detail is expiration dates. Car seats typically expire six to ten years after manufacture, and using an expired seat may reduce its ability to protect a child in a crash.
Local fire departments, health departments, and law enforcement agencies often offer free car seat checks or inspection events throughout the year. Officials recommend taking advantage of these services to ensure children are riding as safely as possible.
As families head back into regular routines after the holidays, safety experts say a quick car seat check can make a big difference in keeping the Wiregrass’ youngest passengers protected.
