If you are going on the road in New York, here is something that you might want to know that could keep your mind at ease: The Empire State has one of the lowest car theft rates in the entire country. New research from Compare the Market shows that New York ranks 8th safest in America when it comes to car theft.
In New York, there are about 144 thefts per 100,000 people. That adds up to 28,323 total thefts a year, which works out to less than 80 cars stolen every single day or about three cars an hour. That might sound like a lot (it certainly did to me), but sadly, it turns out that it’s actually much lower compared to many other states.
While the research didn’t single out New York’s top stolen vehicles, it did let us know what the national favorites for car thieves were. The Hyundai Elantra tops the list with 48,445 thefts, followed by the Hyundai Sonata at 42,813, and the Kia Optima at 30,204.
New Yorkers can feel good knowing they live in one of the safer states when it comes to car theft. However that is still a lot of vehicles being stolen so it is worth taking precautions. Lock up, park in well-lit areas, and double-check your insurance coverage.
