A marked New York State Police patrol vehicle was stolen from an Upstate New York repair shop.
If you have ever had thoughts of stealing a vehicle, a great piece of advice to keep in mind is that you should avoid stealing a marked New York State Police patrol vehicle unless you're okay with getting caught.
According to a New York State Police (NYSP) press release, a rare incident unfolded on Wednesday morning, November 5th, 2025, when a repair shop in Oneonta, NY, contacted law enforcement to report that the shop had been burglarized overnight.
The report stated that one of the items missing was a marked State Police patrol vehicle that had been undergoing service at the shop.
The NYSP quickly began an investigation into the incident and was able to locate and recover the vehicle several counties away from where it was taken.
Police didn't identify any suspects or share what motive they might have had to take the marked car, but did say that when the vehicle was recovered in Rensselaer County, NY, troopers did find a person inside the patrol car.
The unidentified subject was taken into custody and questioned by NYSP investigators. At this time, it's unclear if the subject was arrested or if anyone else was involved. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
