Nissan has announced a new in-car audio system that adjusts sounds based on a driver’s unique hearing patterns.
A car’s audio system is one of the most important features and quality can vary between different automakers. Nissan plans to add its new feature, called Personalized Sound, in select Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The settings can be customized on the center infotainment screen to accommodate multiple user profiles for in-vehicle sound and Bluetooth music apps.
Nissan, which released the new system on Dec. 15, says it’s the first of its kind in the U.S. auto industry.
As complicated as an audio system that adjusts to your own hearing may sound, Nissan says it’s easy to set up and should take around three minutes.
You first download the Personalized Sound app on the Google Play store in your Nissan or Infiniti vehicle. Once you open the app, it will give you a few sound tests by playing different tones and pitches. After giving feedback on each sound on the vehicle’s infotainment screen, the audio system will make a personalized profile based on your hearing.
The settings can be adjusted to tweak a 10-band equalizer with frequencies from 50 hertz to 1,200 hertz. Additional drivers can take the tests and create additional Personalized Sound profiles.
Nissan Senior Product Planner Mitchell Pope first pitched the idea in early 2024, the automaker said.
“I loved the level of customization offered in some premium headphones and I wanted to bring that to the automotive world,” Pope stated in a news release. He also talked about how Nissan wanted to give each user a personalized experience. “After taking the test, most drivers will notice a clear difference with their new audio profile,” Pope said. “They’ll often pick up details they didn’t before, even in songs they’ve listened to countless times. But above all, they’ll know their audio was customized just for them.”
