SOUTH YARMOUTH — A car crash and fire on Highbank Road Tuesday afternoon killed a South Yarmouth man and closed the residential road for several hours, according to Yarmouth police and fire officials, and Times reporting.
The 21-year-old man was the sole occupant of the car that was off the road, on its side and on fire when rescuers arrived, according to Yarmouth Police Chief Kevin Lennon Tuesday. Firefighters had to first douse the fire but the man was already dead at the time, Lennon said.
The car appeared to have crashed and rolled over a guardrail at Snug Harbor Road.
A 911 call about the crash came in at 1:18 p.m., and there was an active fire when the fire department arrived, Yarmouth Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue said on Tuesday. The fire took about 20 minutes to extinguish.
By late afternoon, a state medical officer had been called to the crash scene to remove the man’s body, and then investigators could reconstruct the crash, Lennon said. The family of the man was being notified, he said. There was no immediate information on what caused the crash.
The crash happened on Highbank Road between Great Western Road and Cove View Drive, according to a Yarmouth Police Department post on Facebook. Highbank Road was expected to be closed for several hours. Drivers were asked to avoid the area and drive on alternate routes.
