A collision between a car and a golf cart has left one person dead and two others injured in Jackson County, Ohio, troopers said.
Matthew Juniper, 25, of Wellston, died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday morning in the city of Wellston. Troopers said a registered golf cart was driving south on South Pennsylvania Avenue near 6th Street when it was rear-ended by a 2014 Hyundai, driven by a juvenile whose identity was withheld by investigators due to their status as a minor.
As the Hyundai came to a stop, the golf cart, driven by Brant Darrow, 40, of Wellston, veered off the left side of the road before hitting a tree.
Juniper was a passenger on the golf cart, while the juvenile was the only person in the Hyundai.
Investigators said the juvenile suffered minor injuries and was transported to Holzer Medical Center in Jackson to be treated. Juniper was also taken to Holzer with injuries that proved to be fatal, while Darrow was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital in West Virginia with serious injuries.
Juniper and Darrow were both off-duty police officers of the Wellston Police Department at the time of the crash.
Troopers said Pennsylvania Avenue remained closed for nearly six hours while an on-scene investigation was conducted.
While the road has reopened, the crash remains under investigation.
