FLENSBURG (dpa-AFX) – One in every three new cars registered in Germany in 2025 was an SUV. With 950,895 new registrations, the segment achieved a record market share of 33.3 percent, according to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Last year, there were about 100,000 fewer SUVs registered, accounting for a 30.2 percent share.
The compact class—once the favorite among German car buyers—continues to lose ground. With 476,480 new registrations, it now represents only 16.7 percent of the market—two points less than a year ago. The third spot goes to the small car segment, which remained relatively stable with 337,443 vehicles and a market share of 11.8 percent, ahead of off-road vehicles, which saw a slight decline to 311,061 or 10.9 percent.
Several Segments in Decline
Minis—that is, particularly small cars—as well as the mid-range and upper-range classes and sports cars, are all clearly on the retreat. The upper mid-range segment, however, managed to gain ground.
Looking at individual car models, however, a different picture emerges: The VW Golf leads with 85,023 new registrations. It belongs to the compact class, which is often referred to as the “Golf class” due to its dominance. In second and third place, however, are the VW T-Roc and VW Tiguan, with 78,264 and 63,316 new registrations respectively—an SUV and an off-road vehicle. And the gap is narrowing: In 2024, the Golf still led the T-Roc by 100,183 to 75,398 vehicles.
The SUV segment has almost continuously gained market share in recent years. In 2019, it overtook the compact class as the number one segment in Germany. However, the overall vehicle fleet still tells a different story: Of the nearly 49.6 million cars registered in Germany as of October 1, 2025, 11.1 million were compacts and only 7.1 million were SUVs. Nevertheless, the gap has been closing rapidly in recent times./ruc/DP/jha
