ORANGE, New Jersey (WABC) — A police chase ended with a police-involved shooting in Orange, New Jersey on Sunday.
The incident happened on Sunday, just after 2 p.m., near I-280 Exit 11 westbound.
Authorities say state police shot and wounded a suspect who got out of a vehicle they were pursuing.
The New Jersey State Attorney General's office is investigating.
An eyewitness who started recording as he saw New Jersey state police troopers with guns drawn can be heard shrieking over the burst of gunfire. A man was then seen running from the vehicle… we're stopping the video before he's struck and falls.
There is no word on the suspect's identity or condition.
A grey Acura at the scene was left riddled with bullet holes.
"I was picking up a delivery and then I came through here and I just heard a bunch of sirens, tires squealing…and then there was a slight collision. and then I just heard gunshots, like rapid amounts of gunshots," said Zach McDowell.
Someone who spoke with the black Mercedes driver told Eyewitness News he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, just off exit 11. He even had children in the car who were taken to a hospital to be checked out — and that both the suspect and state troopers opened fire.
There is no word on what led up to the barrage of gunfire in the middle of a Sunday afternoon.
McDowell had kids in his car, too.
"My kids heard the sounds. My son, he asked, 'Daddy, what's that sound?' I was like, 'Don't worry about it. We'll get out of here,'" he said.
There is no word on why the vehicle was being pursued or if there were any other suspects. The suspect's condition is also unknown.
State police have referred all questions to the state Attorney General's office, which isn't yet providing the details.
