A man in his 80s has died after he was struck by a car in Galway late on Friday night.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 11.30pm on Friday, October 31, after a car struck the pedestrian at Peake, on the Tuam Road in Loughgeorge, near Claregalway.
The pedestrian, a man in his 80s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The Coroner was notified and the deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway, where a post-mortem examination will be arranged.
The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was brought to hospital for assessment; his injuries are not described as life-threatening.
The road remained closed on Saturday morning at the scene, which is preserved pending a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Traffic diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
