Officials said a driver traveling fast along southbound 16th Street struck the man crossing the street before hitting four other vehicles.
First responders said three other people were hurt, calling their injuries serious but non-life-threatening.
The driver of the striking vehicle tried to run away from the scene but was stopped and arrested by police shortly after, MPD officials said. The suspect was among the three taken to the hospital.
Investigators have not released any information on the identity of the person who was killed. Police said they're looking into whether the driver was trying to escape from police before the collision.
Expect delays and seek alternate routes while the police investigation continues.
