PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — Neighbors woke up to see Hillside Avenue in Providence completely blocked off Monday with fire trucks and police cars.
Providence police said a person became trapped underneath a car and died.
"This morning, I was sleeping and I heard the fire trucks over here at the street and I got out and I saw people come out of the driveway over that house," said Manuel Darosa who lives in Providence. "My other neighbor told me this lady died under the car."
Police have not released any other details on what led to the tragic accident or the name of the victim, but some neighbors are wondering if the person became trapped after working underneath their car.
"It's sad that somebody can get hurt, it can happen just by working on your car, especially working alone, things can unexpectedly happen," said a woman who works along the street. "You think it's secure and you get it together and you've done it before, but things still can happen unexpectedly."
AAA suggested if people work on their cars, there are rules that must be followed like always having the parking brake on and making sure the car is on solid ground.
"First of all, you never ever get under a car," said John Paul, the car doctor for AAA Northeast. "People sometimes don't put the parking brake on, for instance, so if you're jacking up the car, you should put the parking brake on. That's how these incidents happen, the car literally rolls off the jack — and again, jacks are literally meant to provide a temporary lifting."
