PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — A tragic collision on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 at Bridgeport Way SW in Lakewood claimed the life of a pickup truck driver on Friday afternoon, Washington State Patrol (WSP) said.
The accident occurred around 4:10 p.m. when a Chevy Avalanche collided with a semi-truck, causing the pickup to catch fire, according to WSP.
The driver of the pickup was trapped inside the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and was not impaired, according to authorities.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The collision led to significant traffic disruptions, with the three right lanes of I-5 closed for several hours.
Only the northbound HOV lane remained open initially. By 7 p.m., two lanes had been reopened to traffic.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
