CONCORD, NH — Police in Chichester are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash on Route 4 not far from the town line with Concord on Thursday afternoon.
Around 4:45 p.m., Merrimack County dispatch began fielding calls on Route 4 west in Northwood about an erratic driver who was all “over the road” and “unable to maintain a lane.” A caller followed the vehicle and reported its whereabouts to dispatch as it drove through town, according to scanner chatter.
Later, dispatch learned the car was a Nissan and the owner lived in Concord.
About 15 minutes later, dispatch took a report of a crash with injury and entrapment at the intersection of Route 4 and Bailey Road, just before the town line with Concord.
News 603 posted a video from the crash scene in Chichester on Facebook.
Chichester and Pembroke police headed to the scene while Capital Region dispatch sent Concord, Chichester, and Loudon fire and rescue teams. A New Hampshire Department of Transportation sign unit was also requested.
When police arrived, they shut down the road and realized the Nissan was the same car drivers were filing complaints about in Northwood and Epsom. Firefighters reported two vehicles with heavy damage and one with lighter damage. The crash was between a car and two pickup trucks. At least two people were injured and fluids also leaked onto the highway.
Around 5 p.m., a fire commander reported the woman in the car had died. Another officer also reconfirmed the vehicle appeared to be the one from the previous complaints, based on the driver’s age and information from the vehicle’s registration.
Concord and Loudon EMTs were cleared just before 5:30 p.m.
Just before 1:45 p.m., Concord police and fire and rescue teams were sent to the intersection of Pleasant and South State streets for a report of a crash.
The first arriving officer said one of the drivers was complaining of chest pain, possibly due to a seat belt. A second driver was taken to the hospital later, complaining of leg numbness, according to scanner chatter. The crash involved an Audi SUV and a Toyota RAV4 with a New York registration.
Two tow trucks were requested to remove the vehicles.
Just before noon, police were sent to Auburn and Forest streets for a report of a car crashing into a fire hydrant.
An officer reported that when they arrived at the scene, they found the hydrant was completely broken and about 10 feet from where it was supposed to be.
