Llandrinio bridge is closed today after a car crash left a huge section of its parapet missing.
Emergency services were scrambled to Llandrinio last night after fears a driver entered the water after crashing through the wall of the bridge.
A large section of stone wall is now missing from the bridge, and road is closed, after the reported crash on Monday evening (October 27).

It was confirmed by Powys County Council staff at the scene that they were called out just after 9.30pm. The damage to the bridge is severe with half of the one side of the parapet left completely missing.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue confirmed that crews from Llanfyllin and Welshpool were called to the scene not long after concerns that the driver may have entered the water after the crash.
However, a spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the search found no vehicle had entered the water.

A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales fire and Rescue Service said: “At 9.57pm on Monday, October 27, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Welshpool and Llanfyllin Fire Stations were called to an incident at the Llandrinio Bridge near Criggion.
“Supported by a crew from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, crews responded following reports of severe damage caused to the bridge by a vehicle and uncertainty on whether a vehicle had entered the river.
“Crews, along with swift rescue and water responder teams, conducted a thorough search of the area with no vehicle located.  A multi-agency meeting was held at the scene with all agencies confident that no vehicle had entered the water.

As a result of the damage, it has left the route unpassable in both directions and staff have said the current road closure could be in place for some time.
Powys County Council and Dyfed-Powys Police have been approached for comment.
