NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Suspicious behavior in a Westchester parking lot led police to two stolen cars and an illegal “ghost gun,” according to New Rochelle police.
At 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday, New Rochelle police officers responded to a report of two people stealing license plates from parked vehicles in a parking lot on Garden Street.
The caller reported that a man and woman arrived in a white Nissan Altima. The pair was then spotted getting in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee that was already parked in the lot, where they changed clothes before exiting the SUV, according to NRPD.
Officers at the scene said the couple was affixing newly stolen license plates to the white Altima and discarding the plates previously attached to it.
Officers located and stopped the suspects, who were interviewed and taken into custody. The male suspect was in possession of a loaded handgun believed to be a Polymer 80 “ghost gun” containing four 9mm rounds, according to police.
Both the white Nissan Altima the suspects arrived in and the black Jeep Grand Cherokee were reported stolen out of Connecticut, investigators said.
Both suspects were taken to New Rochelle Police Department headquarters and booked on charges, including theft of license plates, possession of stolen vehicles, and weapons offenses. The investigation remains active and ongoing, with additional charges possible, according to authorities.
Jasiah Amari Curry, 21, of Stamford, was initially charged with grand larceny, two counts of felony criminal possession of stolen property, felony criminal possession of a weapon, felony criminal possession of a weapon (feeding device), and criminal contempt.
Nia Aponte Highsmith, 19, of New Rochelle, was charged with two counts of felony criminal possession of stolen property and grand larceny.
