ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester Police officers are investigating after they say a chase ended in a five-car crash near the Liberty Pole Saturday morning.
They say it started just before 2 a.m., when officers heard reports of someone threatening another person with a gun at the Sunoco on West Main Street. The victim told police the suspect was in a white SUV.
Once officers got to the scene, they saw a white Nissan Rogue pulling out of the parking lot. Officers tried to pull the Nissan over, but say the driver wouldn’t stop — that’s when a chase started.
After chasing through downtown, officers say they lost sight of the Nissan near East Main Street and North Clinton Avenue. They eventually found the Nissan crashed near the Liberty Pole, along with four other cars.
Police tell us the Nissan rear-ended another car that was stopped at a red light at the intersection of East main and Franklin streets, causing a chain reaction of other cars getting hit – including a city security car.
News10NBC crews at the scene saw police officers, firefighters, and AMR van, debris all over the road, and one car flipped on its side.
Here’s what the scene looked like:
The suspect, the driver of the Nissan, was seriously injured and brought to Strong Memorial Hospital. They’re currently in critical but stable condition.
The driver of the city security car and the car that was rear-ended were also brought to Strong with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash is still under investigation, and police say charges for the suspect are pending.
