Rajshahi University on Wednesday introduced five electric cars to facilitate student transportation within the campus.
Vice-chancellor of the university Professor Saleh Hasan Naqib inaugurated the service in front of the RU administration building in the morning.
The initiative has been funded by the Rajshahi University Alumni Association.
According to university officials, the e-cars will operate only on the campus, and the fare is expected to be between Tk 5 and Tk 10.
Professor Naqib said that the newly elected RUAA leadership had been actively working for the welfare of students and the overall development of the university.
‘From supporting BCS examinees to introducing this transport facility, these initiatives reflect their continuous commitment,’ he said.
RUAA president Rafiqul Islam Khan said that they planned to expand the number of e-cars in consultation with the university administration.
‘We also intend to introduce scholarships for meritorious students from low-income backgrounds. The RUAA will continue to work with the university authorities for overall development,’ he added.
RU Central Students’ Union vice-president Mostakur Rahman Zahid said that the initiative fulfilled one of the key promises related to improving campus transport.
‘We had urged the RUAA to take steps in this regard, and they have implemented it. This will ease student suffering,’ he said.
RUAA general secretary Professor Nizam Uddin, executive committee members Nurul Islam Bulbul, student representatives from RUCSU and hall unions, and teachers and students from various departments were also present at the event.
