The 1,064 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has been racking up records around the world this year.
After setting lap records for production cars at five U.S. tracks it went to Germany to beat the Ford Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring lap time mark for American cars.
The hybrid 1,250 hp ZR1X was also along for the ride and beat the ZR1’s time by less than two seconds, but the ZR1 just picked up a new record much closer to the Mustang GTD’s home.
Not in Michigan, but at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park outside of Toronto. The 2.5-mile track is less than an hour’s drive from the Multimatic facility where the Mustang GTD’s fiinal assembly takes place.

Ford builds the Mustang’s body-in-white at its Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan, then ships it to racing and performance car specialist Multimatic where its 815 hp supercharged V8, carbon fiber body panels and advanced suspension system.
Canadian racing driver Ron Fellows set the track record in 2023 with a 670 hp Corvette Z06 at 1:22.12 and returned in collaboration with Chevrolet Canada to see what the ZR1 could do. The first time that he recorded was 1:20.16, but he was just warming up. After putting down a few quicker laps, he ended thee day with a best time of 1:18.22.

But how does that compare to the Mustang GTD? Well, despite Multimatic’s proximity to the track, it hasn’t yet posted an official lap time and Ford hasn’t announced any plans to do so.
It does appear to be working on getting its Nürburgring record back, however, and has been spotted on the track with a Mustang GTD featuring several aerodynamic updates. Ford hasn’t said anything about it, yet, but it will be revealing a new production performance car on January 15 and it just might be an upgraded Mustang GTD.
Chevrolet hasn’t indicated it has something more potent than the ZR1X on the horizon, but its chief engineer has said that it “is not the end of the story.”
