EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — A Sayreville man was arrested for attempted murder after police say he tried to drive into officers who tried to pull him over, and rammed his car into occupied, marked police cars.
Rennard Roseburgh, 32, was charged with three counts of attempted murder, eight counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and eluding. He was transported to the Middlesex County jail pending a court appearance.
The incident unfolded Friday: Sayreville Police pulled Roseburgh over that day for a traffic violation. However, Roseburgh fled from the traffic stop by accelerating at a high speed, which included dragging a Sayreville Police officer, said East Brunswick Police Chief Frank LoSacco.
Roseburgh was unable to be apprehended, but a warrant was issued for his arrest, and East Brunswick Police were notified of the incident.
While on patrol, East Brunswick Patrolman Michael Manning observed Roseburgh’s car, and with the assistance of other police officers, they conducted a motor vehicle stop on Old Bridge Turnpike.
After initially stopping, Roseburgh accelerated toward Patrolman Manning, Patrolman Colin White and Lieutenant Thomas Cassidy, all of whom had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by his fleeing vehicle. A pursuit was initiated, during which time Roseburgh purposely rammed his vehicle into several occupied patrol units before finally being apprehended and taken into custody.
“I want to take a moment to commend the outstanding work of the involved East Brunswick Police Officers, whose actions undoubtedly saved lives. Roseburgh’s outrageous actions created a big danger to the public, and what he did could have resulted in the deaths of these brave officers, who selflessly work to protect our community,” said LoSacco.
Chief LoSacco said he wants to be very clear:
“The only appropriate venue to challenge law enforcement action is through the judicial system, not by endangering lives in the street. Attempting to “fight the case” during a motor vehicle stop or arrest will only result in additional criminal charges, increased penalties and incarceration,” said East Brunswick Police in a press release Saturday.
