Metra unveiled a prototype for their Cafe Car that will rotate across the busiest train lines this fall as the transportation agency asks riders for feedback on the design.
The car will debut on Metra’s Rock Island Line on Sept. 30, appearing on two trains throughout the day. Rock Island riders will have five more opportunities to see the car on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, before the car is parked for a showcase at the LaSalle Street station starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6.

The Café Car is a prototype railcar with “café-style seating, counters, and tables that offer a new way for riders to relax, connect and engage during their trip,” according to the Metra website.
To design the railcar, Metra removed the second level of one half of a car and installed counters, stools, booths and tables.
Following the showcase, the car will move across the BNSF, Milwaukee District North Line, the Milwaukee District West Line, the Union Pacific Noth Line, the Union Pacific Northwest Line and the Union Pacific West line.
“We created this special car in an attempt to improve the riding experience and maybe attract new riders,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “This is your chance to check it out and tell us what you think. Would you use it? What amenities would you like to see? What other thoughts do you have?”
Riders who complete the onboard survey during morning and evening rush hours will receive free snacks and beverages, Metra said.
The fall release is only temporary, giving Metra a chance to test if riders would like to see more of the cars in the future.
Depending on the feedback received, Metra said it will evaluate whether and how to bring the Café Car back.
Metra has released some dates for the Café Cart’s rotating schedule, though it warns the schedule is subject to change, so check their website for updates.
